Bastard cut/Smooth cut files are designed with two types of teeth. One side has coarser teeth for heavy stock removal. The other side has finer files for detailing and fine finishing work.
Single cut files consist of one set of parallel, diagonal teeth extended across the face of the file. They are used for sharpening or to produce a smooth finish. Double cut files consist of two sets of teeth crisscrossing each other at opposite angles. They are used for heavy stock removal.
Handles are attached to the file and are commonly made of wood or plastic. Some files have integrated handles that are molded into the file material.
